Lynn Taylor is a personal friend of UHF.  She's a passioniate preservationist and we've seen her great work firsthand in Nashville.  She's seeking preservation professional to help give these webinars to a national audience.  Here's what she recently wrote to us:

We are looking for WEBINAR PRESENTERS on historic preservation and restoration. Do you have a great PowerPoint presentation? Do you know of someone you does? Do you already have a webinar scheduled and would like to list it on the Taylor Made Plans events page?

Labor Day weekend celebration at Camp Floyd in Fairfield

Posted by kirk in workshops , Utah County , tours , state parks , historic landscapes , Fairfield , events

fairfield_schoolhouseCamp Floyd State Park is hosting Camp Floyd Days on Labor Day Weekend, September 3 and 5, 2011.  The event will allow visitors to experience camp life and participate in several activities performed by soldiers of Johnston’s Army.  Events include reenactments, encampments, stagecoach rides (Monday 12pm - 2pm), firearm and cannon demonstrations, marches, drills, 1861 period games, and photos in period uniform.  The events will be conducted 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.

A Utah Furniture Lecture and Antiques Workshop is also scheduled on Saturday, September 3rd from 1pm - 3pm.  The lecture details the recently placed furnishings in the Stagecoach Inn which accurately portray and interpret how the settlers of Fairfield lived during the 1860’s.  The Antiques Workshop provides an opportunity for visitors to bring in an antique to receive an informal appraisal from representatives of the Utah Antique Dealers Association.  The cost for each appraisal is $5.  This event was funded in part by a grant from the Utah Humanities Council and the Utah Preservation Initiatives Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Standard museum entrance fees are $2 per person or $6 per family.  Food concession and stagecoach rides will be available to purchase at the event.

Making a Livable Community on 400 South

east_facadeBack on May 19, Salt Lake City Planning held a workshop with property and business owners, nearby residents, stakeholders, and other interested parties to discuss how to make 400 South a more inviting, livable corridor through good planning.  With large maps and markers, participants were able to describe their perfect neighborhood.  They included ideas about future land use, historic preservation, housing, transportation, jobs, walkability and transportation, and more.

This work is taking place thanks to a grant to the city from HUD to focus efforts on building better community around the three TRAX stops on the boulevard.

Of course, there are likely hundreds of historic properties within the 1/2 mile wide corridor that is being studied.  Many of those that exist today are in direct conflict with the city's zoning which allows up to 7 1/2 stories within the transit corridor, which is one block on either side of the transit line on 400 South.

Classical architecture highlighted by new event, group

Posted by kirk in workshops , tours , Salt Lake County , Salt Lake City , rehabilitation , masonry , history , events , education , documentation

Moss_Courthouse_w_banners_IMG_0306Salt Lake City has a wealth of Classical style architecture from the Moss Federal Courthouse, to the Brownstone Building (historic Utah Commercial & Savings Bank) that houses Martine and Oh Shucks as well as offices, to the interior of the Utah Theatre.  The classical styles are rooted here in Utah's history as an emerging state, closely following the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago that helped revive the ideals of classicism across many walks of life.

A new chapter of a group that highlights the hsitory and benefits of classicism has been founded in Utah and will host a series of upcoming events that are open to the public starting Thursday, May 19.  Events will range from lectures to workshops to tours.
