Classical architecture highlighted by new event, group

Moss_Courthouse_w_banners_IMG_0306Salt Lake City has a wealth of Classical style architecture from the Moss Federal Courthouse, to the Brownstone Building (historic Utah Commercial & Savings Bank) that houses Martine and Oh Shucks as well as offices, to the interior of the Utah Theatre.  The classical styles are rooted here in Utah's history as an emerging state, closely following the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago that helped revive the ideals of classicism across many walks of life.

A new chapter of a group that highlights the hsitory and benefits of classicism has been founded in Utah and will host a series of upcoming events that are open to the public starting Thursday, May 19.  Events will range from lectures to workshops to tours.

Garfield County Courthouse to be rehabilitated

Posted by kirk in Wayne County , rehabilitation , Panguitch , National Register , masonry , how to rehab , historic districts

PanguitchThe Salt Lake Tribune has reported that the historic Garfield County Courthouse in Panguitch will under a rehabilitation that includes a seismic upgrade.  This is great news for Panguitch, an amazingly intact historic town, as well as the Wayne County region which has several small communities that attract visitors and new residents because of their aesthetic charm.  Roughly half of the historic county courthouses remain throughout Utah, so rehabilitation of the courthouse is good news that it will ensure it's presence and use for several more decades.

Understanding Historic Mortars Brochure (79kb PDF)

UNDERSTANDING HISTORIC MASONRY MORTARS

The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, Mt. Carroll, Illinois and John
Lambert, Founder / President of Abstract Masonry Restoration have teamed up to
provide this 2 day workshop in Salt Lake City, Utah.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Lately, confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of historic masonry mortars
and today’s repointing mortars. A clear understanding of the differences between
prominent historic mortar binders such as lime putty, natural cement, pozzolans,
hydraulic lime, Portland cement and hydrated lime is essential for architects,
contractors, historic building owners, masons and preservationists to intelligently
specify and correctly use these materials today.
This intensive course is not taught or sponsored by material suppliers. Therefore, the
training you receive is unbiased and not influenced by potential product sales. It will
help dispel many falsehoods and deepen your knowledge of the subject.
The objective of this 2 day course is to increase your understanding of the many binders,
aggregates and additives traditionally used in American masonry mortars between the
late 1,600’s and 1950 and how these materials are best used in today’s repointing
mortars.
