The Courthouse Girls make their Salt Lake City debut!

00_courthousegirlsoffarmland_dciff_mThe Courthouse Girls of Farmland is a story about a small town, historic preservation, and seven senior women who got up from their bridge club table to make a bold and controversial statement.

The story began in 2005 when the commissioners in Indiana's Rudolph County voted two-to-one in favor of demolishing the county's historic courthouse and replacing it with a new building. Many in the area were outraged, and soon after Eileen Herron, and six of her bridge club friends were posing as centerfolds for a Courthouse Girls 2006 calendar.

This documentary in not only about making the Farmland calendar, but also addresses the bigger issue of preserving our history in the form of buildings, culture and the lives of the citizens that live there.

Utah Heritage Foundation and the Salt Lake Film Center are having a free screening of the Courthouse Girls of Farmland at the Salt Lake City Main Library Auditorium, Monday, November 17, at 7 pm.

Garneta Amburn, Wanda Grove and Iraida Davis Leitch (three of the seven "centerfolds") are coming to town, with the film's director Norman Klein, to answer your questions and sign copies of the calendar.

Following the movie there will also be discussion from a panel of local preservationists. The schedule is as follows:

7 pm - Film Screening at the Salt Lake City Main Library Auditorium
8 pm - Short Q and A with the film's director, Norman Klein, and the "girls"
8:30-9 pm - Panel Discussion featuring:
Pete Ashdown, President, Utah Heritage Foundation
Wilson Martin, Utah State Historic Preservation Officer
Robin Zeigler, Senior Preservation Planner, Salt Lake City Planning and Zoning Enforcement Division
NaVee Vernon, Historical Director, Summit County Historical Society
